NEIL KEITH BAKER

biography:

Neil Keith Baker was born in Luton, England. He gained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Norwich School of Art and Design, in 1999. After a period of independent practice he returned to study at The Slade School of Art, London where he completed an MA in Fine Art in 2007.

Following periods living in Hamburg and Munich, between 2012 and 2016, he now lives and works in Melbourne, Australia.

Throughout this time Neil has attempted to develop his practice in a way that gives the greatest chance of producing images and objects that are at once strange (in the sense that they haven’t been seen before) and honest (in that they embrace the inherent doubt and self consciousness involved in their production). Neil believes that the production of an image involves a kind of magic that eludes rational understanding and hopes that, whilst the images might be opaque and dense on the surface, they remain open and transparent in their desire to communicate his fascination with the moment when something rises out of nothing and surpasses the artist’s own ideas of what might be good or desirable.
