VIVIAN COOPER SMITH

 

biography:

Born in New Zealand, Vivian Cooper Smith lived in Bangladesh, India and Perth before moving to Melbourne in 1999. Guided by a diffractive methodology, Vivian uses haptic and performative studio processes alongside re-photography to unpick photographic representation.

Recent exhibitions include A Light Without Stars, Galerie pompom, Sydney (2018), The Insufficient Photograph, Bus Projects, Melbourne (2017), Apparition Apparatus, Galerie pompom, Sydney and Apparition Apparatus Extended, Turner Galleries, Perth (2016). In 2017 Vivian received the NGV Women’s Association Award and previously has been a finalist in the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, the Darebin Art Prize and the Bowness Photography Prize. He has exhibited extensively across Australia and his work is held in public and private collections.

In 2017 Vivian completed an MFA at the Victorian College for the Arts.
